According to Wikipedia,

An artist is a person engaged in an activity related to creating art, practicing the arts, or demonstrating an art. The common usage in both everyday speech and academic discourse is a practitioner in the visual arts only. The term is often used in the entertainment business, especially in a business context, for musicians and other performers (less often for actors). "Artiste" (the French for artist) is a variant used in English only in this context. 

It's a very commonly heard thing that we all have an artist inside us, lying in it's own disguise awaiting it's discovery for it..

Even greats like Pablo Picasso  second this notion, he once said,

"All children are artists. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up."

An artist, creates with vision and makes time stands still. It makes the artist and we the viewers happy, curious. The beauty lies in their efforts which they put in creating masterpieces without expectation of success and hone their craft in their process.

They have an ability to do things differently espescially observing things, Someone once said,

Looking at things is important, but not nearly as important as actually seeing and understanding what is seen. This is what artists  do best.

They have an ability to see the beauty in common things and lay it out to the world out there. Looking through a specialized perspective glass is what they do best.

Although We all have in ourselves the budding artist, many chose to suppress it.
